What Is an Alcohol and Drug Evaluation and Why Do You Need One?

An alcohol and drug evaluation (also called a substance abuse assessment) is a structured clinical interview designed to determine whether an individual’s alcohol or drug use is problematic and what level of treatment or education if any is recommended.

Courts, probation departments, and pre-trial programs in Georgia require this evaluation as a standard step following the

  • DUI (Driving Under the Influence) charges
  • Drug possession or drug-related offenses
  • Domestic violence cases involving substance use
  • Probation conditions requiring substance abuse review
  • Pre-trial diversion program requirements
  • License reinstatement after DUI suspension

Without a completed, court-accepted evaluation, you cannot satisfy your legal obligation. Choosing the wrong provider, one not recognized by the courts, can delay your case, hurt your record, or create serious legal complications.
