Out of State DUI Evaluation in Georgia: What You Need Before You Go Home

DUI Evaluation

If you were visiting Georgia, passing through on a road trip, or here for work when you got pulled over and charged with a DUI, the last thing you want is to leave the state without handling things the right way. Because here’s the truth what you do before you go home matters more than most people realize. A missed step, a wrong evaluation, or an incomplete report can cost you your license back in your home state, even after you’ve done everything Georgia asked of you.

At AACS Atlanta, we work with out of state drivers regularly, and we know exactly what it takes to get this done correctly for Georgia and for wherever you’re headed back to.

Georgia Takes DUI Charges Seriously

Georgia has some of the stricter DUI laws in the country. Whether you’re a Georgia resident or just someone who happened to get charged here, the state’s requirements apply to you all the same. After a DUI charge in Georgia, the court system and the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) both have a say in what happens to your driving privileges, and they operate completely independently of each other.

That means even if you’ve satisfied the Georgia court’s requirements, the DDS may still have a hold on your Georgia driving record. And your home state’s DMV won’t reinstate your license until Georgia’s records are clean. This is why getting your DUI evaluation right, from the very beginning, is so important.

What Is a DUI Evaluation in Georgia?

A DUI evaluation, formally called a DUI clinical evaluation in Georgia, is a structured, one-on-one clinical assessment conducted by a licensed evaluator. It covers your history with alcohol and drugs, the circumstances of your DUI charge, and any previous arrests or treatment history. In many cases, a drug screen is also requested to help accurately determine your risk level.

At the end of the evaluation, the clinician produces a written report with a formal recommendation. That recommendation might be as simple as completing a DUI risk reduction school program, or it could involve an ASAM Level I outpatient treatment program lasting anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the findings.

This report is what Georgia’s courts, your probation officer, and the Georgia DDS all need to see. It is also the document your home state’s DMV will want before reinstating your license, which is exactly why it has to be done right.

The Mistake Most Out-of-State Drivers Make

Here’s where a lot of people go wrong. They complete a standard alcohol and drug evaluation because someone told them to a probation officer, a friend, or a quick Google search and they think they’re done. What they don’t realize is that a basic alcohol and drug evaluation and a DUI Evaluations are not the same thing in Georgia.

A standard alcohol and drug evaluation may satisfy your probation officer, but when you go to the Georgia DDS to clear your record, they’ll tell you that you actually need a DUI evaluation, which means starting the process over and paying for a second evaluation. And if the report isn’t formatted in a way your home state’s DMV accepts, you may face a third round of paperwork back home.

Working with an experienced provider from the start eliminates all of that. At AACS Atlanta, the first thing we do is ask about your specific charge and your home state, so we give you exactly what you need, nothing less and nothing more.
